Family Friendly Earth Day Events

Earth Day is just around the corner, and there are lots of family friendly events where kids can learn more and have fun. Below are some highlights, and you can find more by searching our Calendar of Events.

April 13-14
Unearth Science Festival
Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe
This two-day event celebrates science and nature in ways that encourage exploration with more than 40 hands-on activities geared towards children ages 7 to 12. Attendees will take part in activities that facilitate learning about the plant life cycle, and how important connections are made between flowers and pollinators, resulting in fruits and seeds. Feature learning opportunities include an interactive pollinator challenge, dissecting a coneflower, and constructing an art installation that will serve as a home for native bees. 10am - 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Admission free, parking fee applies.

April 13
Earth Day Celebration
Peck Farm, 4038 Kaneville Road, Geneva
The Natural Resources Committee of Geneva and the Geneva Park District invite you to bring the entire family out to Peck Farm Park to celebrate Earth Day. Enjoy a variety of activities including bicycle tune-ups, free paper shredding, food and green vendors, chair massages, children's activities and games and more. All ages. 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. FREE.

April 13-14
Party for the Planet
Brookfield Zoo, First Avenue and 31st Street, Brookfield
Every day is Earth Day at Brookfield Zoo, but on this very special day the zoo will be showcasing some of the steps you can commit to that will truly make a difference for animals across the globe! With special Zoo Chats and green activities and crafts, Party for the Planet will be filled with educational, engaging, and fun activities for the entire family. All ages. Sat 8am - 3pm; Sun 9am - 2pm. Regular admission applies.

April 14
Family Festival: Earth Day
John G. Shedd Aquarium, 1200 S. Lake Shore Dr., Chicago
Celebrate our amazing natural world with the whole family! Held on special celebration days throughout the year, admission to this program allows you to see animals up close, explore hands-on activities, get creative with take-home crafts and party with a purpose. Meet a live animal, engage in hands-on science activities and make a craft to take home. Activities are designed for families with children ages 5-12. Adults must attend with a child. One adult must accompany every five children under 18. 12pm. 10am - 12pm.

April 22
Earth Day
Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, 2430 N. Cannon Drive, Chicago
Join us as we showcase endangered species on Earth Day! We'll be running Critter Connections all day for our endangered turtles and snakes. Then stick around to start your seedlings with Gotham Greens as they run Earth Day activities through the afternoon. 10am - 2pm. All ages. Included with admission.

April 24
Earth Week Drop-In Program - Diggin' in the Kids' Garden
Vera Meineke Nature Center at Spring Valley, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg
Dig around with us in the Kids' Garden looking for life right below the surface of the soil. Meet in the Spring Valley Kids’ Garden located in the backyard of the Nature Center. All ages. 4pm - 5pm. FREE.

April 27
Party for the Planet
Cosley Zoo, 1356 Gary Ave., Wheaton
Explore various ways you and your family can get involved in conservation initiatives by visiting with local organizations and businesses. Come to Cosley Zoo and learn how to "Spring into Action!" this year. Also, be on the lookout for the Lorax. Party for the Planet activities are free with zoo admission. All ages. 10am - 2pm.

April 28
Earth Day Celebration
Emily Oaks Nature Center, 4650 Brummel, Skokie
Celebrate the earth as a vessel of life at Emily Oaks Nature Center. This annual event features themed activities along the main trail. Featuring food and native plants for sale. All ages. 12 - 4 PM. FREE.
