September is nearly here, school's are getting back in session, and the apples are getting ripe! It's time to break out those family favorite apple recipes, and go pick some fresh apples. There are a number of great local orchards and u-pick locations, and here are our picks for some of the best apple picking near Chicago. Admission and prices for U-Pick and attractions vary widely at most locations based on the type of entry and activities you're looking for. Visit the web sites to verify season opening dates, admission and ticket information, and to check on supply.

All Seasons Apple Orchard-Pumpkin Patch

Take a wagon ride to our apple orchard to go apple picking among 15,000 apple and pear trees. There's also a 10-acre pumpkin patch that opens in late September where you can pick from a variety of pumpkins and gourds. Fall family-friendly activities include a corn maze, petting zoo, pumpkin patch and more, with Pony rides, lives shows and apple cannon available on weekends.
Hours: Open September 1 - November 4. Weekdays 10 am - 5 pm; Weekends, Labor Day and Columbus Day 10am - 6pm.

Apple Holler

Just north of the Illinois border, Apple Holler is a 74 acre orchard that also offers pear, pumpkins, and other fruits. Kids can pick apples straight from the trees. Fall fun also includes pony rides, barnyard animals, tractor pulled wagon rides, a crazy corn maze, pedal carts, a Golden Goat Bridge, cool cow maze, gemstone mining and more.
Hours: Farm Park and Orchard open daily through October, 9am - 3:30pm.

County Line Orchard

County Line Orchard is in Indiana just one hour from the loop, and offers apple picking fun, a corn maze and a kids farm with plenty of farm animals. Other farm activities include a MooChoo ride, mini maze, pumpkin eating dino, toddler play area, and more - check to see which activities are available vs. weekends only. Pick your own apples, or find pre-picked apples in the barn.

Heinz Orchard

If you're looking for pure apple picking fun without the distraction of attractions, this orchard is just what you need. Located just next to Libertyville, this no-frills spot offers free parking and no admission fees. (And also no food and drink, so pack a snack!) Just pay for what you pick.

Homestead Orchard

Homestead Orchard is a quiet place in the country to pick 23 varieties of apples, pie cherries and pears. The 1880s horse barn is now a store, offering hand crafted items, glassware, fresh honey from the orchard's own bee hives, and candles. And a special room honors WWII veterans with memorabilia.
Hours: Monday - Saturday 10am-4pm, Sundays 12-5pm.

Honey Hill Orchard

This family-owned and operated orchard has 2,100 apple trees, with an additional 500 trees at a second farm location. What started out as a simple farm stand has grown to include pick your own apples, raspberries and pumpkins, a bakery, the Apple Barn Country Store and family activities. Kids can enjoy meeting the barnyard animals such as horses, goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens and turkeys, and have fun in the straw maze and climbing the straw pyramid. Entry and activities are free!
Hours: Sept 1, 3, 4 9:00-1:00. Sept 6 - Oct 31 open daily from 9am - 5:30pm.

Jonamac Orchard

Pick-your-own apples from over 40 varieties during the season. 7,000 trees, and starting in late September you can catch a weekend hayride to the pick-your-own pumpkin patch. Other fun includes a Jumping Pillow, petting zoo, corn maze, Barn Yard activity area, peddle tractors, sand pile, corn bin, play barn, mazes, tube slide, jumping pillow, apple train, Apple Cannon and more. Grand Opening is Labor Day Weekend.

Kuipers Family Farm

Freshly harvested apples available for purchase, and pick your own on the weekends. Call first to check on supply. Delicious fare includes apple cider donuts, pies, fudge and fresh pressed apple cider. Start your fun with an old-fashioned hayride to the grove where you can select from over 20 varieties of apples during the harvest season. Have more fun at the Pumpkin Farm with farm animals, a Jumping Pillow, Tractor Tire Mountain, MAiZE.
Hours: Pick Your Own Apples on Saturdays, Sundays & Columbus Day only through October. Store open August 18-October 30: Mon-Sat 9am-6pm and Sun 10am-6pm. October 31-December 16: Daily 10am - 5pm. Pumpkin Farm opens September 15.

Prairie Sky Orchard

This orchard focuses on apples and pumpkins - no admission charge and no rides or concessions. Pick your apples, then head to the store and pick up some apple cider donuts, raw local honey, jams, salsas, butters, fruit pies, cider and more.

Royal Oak Farm Orchard

This orchard offers over 17,000 apple trees with over 30 varieties of apples, plus pumpkins, giant pumpkins, gourds and winter squash. Purchase or pick your own apples, and get fresh apple cider donuts in the Bakery. Entertainment includes a Train, Carousel, Hay Ride and Orchard Tour rides, tokens required.
